Bolton Training Practice
The Practice
We are a small practice situated in the suburban North East fringe of the town. We aim to combine quality of care for our patients with a high quality of life for ourselves. We are egalitarian, treating all who work with us as colleagues and not expecting anyone to contribute more than we ourselves and being committed to rewarding colleagues fairly. Out of hours cover is provided by the GP Emergency Centre.
The practice has developed a leading role in education, with activity in the following areas:-
- Two G.P.Registrars in post from August 2003
- Medical student training
- Training Nurse Practitioners from the University of Liverpool
- Practice Nurse training for all new Practice Nurses in Wigan and Bolton
- Dr.Page is the Course Organiser for the Wigan & Bolton Vocational Training Scheme
The Trainers
All the partners are approved trainers
- Dr. Angus Kirby MB BS FRCGP DRCOG DFFP
Angus has been a keen trainer since 1992 and aims to provide an enjoyable year in general practice for our registrar. He takes the lead with teaching medical students from the University of Manchester. - Dr. Julian Page MB ChB FRCGP DRCOG DOccMed
Julian joined the practice in 1989. He is the Course Organiser for the GPSTP's Day Release Course. He is also involved in research producing the new version of the trainer's report for summative assessment and the national log-book for vocational training. - Dr. Julie McMillen MB ChB MRCGP DRCOG DFFP
Julie was our first registrar in 1993 and stayed on as a part time partner. She has been an active trainer since 2000.
The Training
As a G.P.Registrar in our Practice you will be treated as a Partner, with your own consulting room and computer terminal. You will be provided with the equipment needed for your work and study. We will encourage your associate membership of the College of General Practitioners and will involve you in the management of the practice.
All G.P.Registrars in the country are required to take "Summative Assessment," it consists of four components- a multiple choice paper, a video of your consultations, an audit and the Trainer's Report. We will support you through this process as much as possible. We will act as a resource for your audit. We have a practice video camera that can easily be set up in the registrar's consulting room. We will make every effort to ensure it comes up to standard.
Your trainer will devote a lot of time to your education ensuring it is relevant, interesting, varied and tailored to your individual needs, and to summative assessment. In return we will expect you to take a lead role in assessing, planning and actioning your educational needs. You will be asked to evaluate the teaching we provide for you. We hope you will sit the MRCGP examination.
